Depending on the severity of the issue, some people may be referred to their physician, while others are given a recommendation of activities to perform at home. Our trained staff may also recommend you obtain a prescription for more formal Rehabilitation services. These are brief screening sessions to help guide you in the best direction. Please call one of our three locations to schedule an appointment.

Sports Science -Lactate Threshold Testing

What is Lactate Threshold?

As exercise intensity increases, lactate production also increases. The concentration of lactate in the blood stream is associated with hydrogen ions that not only cause a burning sensation, but also limit an athlete's sustainable intensity. Lactate threshold is the point when the body produces hydrogen ions too fast and can no longer absorb all of the lactate that is being produced by the working muscle cells.

The test is appropriate for:

  • Triathletes
  • Cross Country Skiers
  • Distance Runners
  • Cyclists
  • Any other endurance athlete

Why get tested?

High-quality training is what most athletes and active people want. This testing is not just for elite athletes; it is beneficial for anyone who wishes to train more efficiently. Lactate threshold is one of the best physiological markers for quality training and improved performance in endurance sports. By measuring the lactate levels in blood samples taken during controlled tests, we can determine training zones specific to you. It will allow you to train with the maximum benefit in the least amount of time.

Using results to improve training

The results of testing can help athletes establish heart rate zones, tailor their workouts,or set a race pace to achieve the best performance. Applying the use of our staff of Athletic Trainers,Exercise Physiologists and your test results we can design your workouts to stimulate adaptations that will dramatically increase performance, while minimizing damage to the muscles, therefore reducing recovery time.

The Lactate Threshold Test

The lactate threshold test consists of a graded exercise protocol lasting approximately 30 minutes. The test is conducted in one of our clinics using a treadmill or your personal bike on our Computrainer stationary trainer. The concentration of lactate is measured from a blood sample drawn from a prick of the finger. The total testing time will be approximately one hour. You should prepare for the lactate testing session as you would a moderately difficult workout. If you are interested in doing a running test, please bring appropriate running clothing and clean, dry running shoes. Cyclists should bring their bike, in good working condition, as well as their cycling clothing. Heart rate monitors will be provided, although you're welcome to use your own.
